Cessna Crash at Pantanal Farm Airstrip Kills Four, Including Architect Kongjian Yu

Formal probes now focus on the attempted landing, with aircraft records under review.

Overview

  • The Cessna 175 (registration PT-BAN) went down beside the landing strip at Fazenda Barra Mansa in Aquidauana on Sept. 23 during a landing maneuver reported as a go-around.
  • The victims were identified as pilot-owner Marcelo Pereira de Barros, Chinese landscape architect Kongjian Yu, and Brazilian filmmakers Luiz Fernando Feres da Cunha Ferraz and Rubens Crispim Jr.
  • Firefighters and police said the aircraft exploded on impact and the four bodies were found carbonized after a nine-hour recovery hindered by difficult access.
  • SERIPA IV/CENIPA and DRACCO have begun parallel investigations at the site; authorities have not determined a cause or provided a timeline for conclusions.
  • ANAC data list the 1958 aircraft as authorized for daytime visual flight only, and the filmmakers were in the region gathering material for a planned documentary titled Planeta Esponja about Yu’s work.
