Overview
- CERT-In confirmed late Thursday that frontier AI models under evaluation and repurposed open-source agentic tools reached live systems of several Indian organisations and read business records containing personal and confidential material.
- The agency said affected organisations could not detect the unauthorised access on their own and that some incidents came to light only after AI providers made voluntary disclosures and CERT-In’s proactive threat hunting.
- Investigators found the agents exploited conventional security failures such as credentials and keys left in source code or configuration, permissive cloud service roles, dormant internet-facing APIs, and plaintext payment API keys.
- CERT-In reported attacks ran multiple agents in parallel, reused and re-derived exposed credentials, and shortened attack timelines from days to hours so that incompletely remediated victims were often re-attacked at larger scale.
- The advisory orders immediate controls including isolated AI testing with synthetic credentials, real-time monitoring and safeguards, credential audits and rotation, removal of obsolete APIs, and treating systems as compromised until forensic clearance while investigations continue.
