Cercado de Lima Cleanup Removes Over 850 Tons After New Year’s Celebrations

Officials emphasized fines exceeding S/440 for burning or abandoning trash following the overnight cleanup.

Overview

  • The city’s Services to the City and Environmental Management office led an overnight operation across six zones using more than 300 workers, two washing cisterns, five compactors and two front loaders.
  • Barrios Altos and Mirones Bajo each accounted for about 200 tons, the Historic Center surpassed 150 tons, and Santa Beatriz, Chacra Ríos and Cipreses registered roughly 100 tons apiece.
  • Crews swept and washed streets, collected solid waste and eliminated 62 burn points detected in multiple sectors of the city center.
  • Submanager Héctor Salvatierra commended the sanitation teams and said the objective was to leave high-traffic areas in perfect condition.
  • The municipality linked the surge to recurring holiday peaks, recalling about 650 tons generated around Christmas in Gamarra and urging residents to avoid street dumping and participate in recycling.
