Overview
- The High-Powered Committee will meet on February 4 at 4 pm at Kartavya Bhawan-3 in New Delhi under Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai.
- It will be the first full HPC sitting since the September 24 violence in Leh that left four civilians dead and about 90 injured.
- Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance say they will press for inclusion under the Sixth Schedule and full statehood with a legislative assembly, alongside other safeguards.
- The groups earlier submitted a joint memorandum to the Home Ministry outlining a draft Ladakh Statehood Act, Sixth Schedule provisions, a 30-seat assembly and Article 371-type protections.
- Detentions and redress remain key issues, with activist Sonam Wangchuk held under the National Security Act in Jodhpur and demands for releases and compensation pending.
