Centre Tells Delhi HC Kejriwal Will Get Government Residence Within 10 Days

The case highlights demands for transparent housing allotment rules.

Overview

  • Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured Justice Sachin Datta that appropriate accommodation will be allotted within ten days, and the court recorded the statement and will issue an order.
  • AAP’s petition seeks allotment under Rule 26(iii) of the 31 July 2014 Office Memorandum for national party convenors not housed in any other capacity.
  • The Centre said parties cannot demand a particular bungalow, noting 35 Lodhi Estate is already allotted to a Minister of State and that allotments depend on availability and the waiting list.
  • Earlier, the High Court asked the government to file the governing policy, the current waiting list and the date 35 Lodhi Estate was re-allotted, citing concerns over arbitrariness.
  • AAP counsel argued Kejriwal should receive a Type 7 or Type 8 unit rather than a lower category, while the judge encouraged resolution through dialogue with the ministry; Kejriwal left 6, Flagstaff Road in October 2024.
