Centre Sanctions ₹24,000 Crore for New Delhi Road and Tunnel Projects

It enshrines single-point execution by the NHAI, drainage upgrades, waste-based construction, traffic monitoring technology.

Overview

  • The Union Cabinet approved ₹24,000 crore on June 4 for new underground tunnels and elevated corridors to ease Delhi’s traffic congestion.
  • Detailed Project Reports have been drawn up for a 7 km Shiv Murti–Nelson Mandela Road tunnel and an elevated link from INA to IGI Airport, with highways planned to Katra, Amritsar and Dehradun.
  • The NHAI is already executing ₹35,000 crore of ongoing works and has completed ₹64,000 crore in the capital, and will now convert Rohtak Road, Ashram–Badarpur and MG Road into signal-free corridors.
  • An additional ₹150 crore has been earmarked for road overbridges and underbridges at railway crossings, coupled with upgraded drainage systems to prevent waterlogging.
  • In a sustainability drive, the NHAI will reuse inert solid waste and construction debris in road building as part of Delhi’s overall ₹1.25 lakh crore infrastructure programme.
