Centre Reports 3.17 Lakh Inspections, 4,298 Licence Actions in Fertiliser Crackdown

Officials invoked the Essential Commodities Act alongside the Fertiliser Control Order to safeguard supplies.

  • The enforcement drive ran from April to November during the Kharif season and the ongoing Rabi cycle, targeting black marketing, hoarding and diversion of subsidised fertilisers.
  • Across the campaign, authorities reported 8,777 show-cause notices, 4,298 distributor licence cancellations or suspensions, and 547 FIRs nationwide.
  • Actions tied to specific violations included 5,119 notices, 3,645 licence actions and 418 FIRs for black marketing; 667 notices, 202 licence actions and 37 FIRs for hoarding; and 2,991 notices, 451 licence actions and 92 FIRs for diversion.
  • A parallel quality push issued 3,544 notices over suspected substandard fertilisers, resulting in 1,316 licence actions and 60 FIRs, with regular sampling and testing cited by the Department.
  • Uttar Pradesh led state enforcement with 28,273 inspections and 157 FIRs, while Maharashtra, Bihar and Rajasthan undertook large-scale operations as states used digital dashboards to track stocks, redirected seized material to cooperatives and, according to officials, curbed artificial shortages.
