Centre Relaxes MRP Rules as New GST Rates Kick In on Sept. 22

Regulators ease labeling obligations to speed the transition, shifting the onus to dealer circulars that many retailers say have yet to arrive.

Overview

  • Revised price stickers on unsold packages made before September 22 are no longer mandatory, according to a central notification.
  • The requirement to publish revised MRPs in two newspapers is waived, with manufacturers directed to circulate updated price lists to dealers and retailers and send a copy to Legal Metrology.
  • Pre-printed packaging may be used until March 31, 2026 or until stock is exhausted, provided MRPs are corrected and the original declaration remains visible.
  • Retailers in Hyderabad report delays in receiving new price lists and say they will sell existing stock at current MRPs until clear guidance reaches stores.
  • The GST enforcement wing warns it will act if tax cuts are not passed through to shoppers, as consumer advisories urge buyers to verify MRPs and bills once the new rates apply.
