Centre Pompidou Closes for Five-Year Renovation as October ‘Because Beaubourg’ Takeover Sells Out Nights

Backed by the State, the €460 million redesign leaves about €80 million still to fund.

Overview

  • After shutting to the public on 22 September, the museum will briefly reopen 24–25 October for a two-day, day-and-night program celebrating the Because label.
  • Daytime access will be free from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., while evening entries were priced at €40 and the 8,500 tickets for the two nights have already sold out, according to organizers.
  • Programming features concerts and immersive works with artists including Christine and the Queens, Catherine Ringer and Justice, plus installations by Thomas Bangalter.
  • The overhaul spans asbestos removal, full accessibility and an energy retrofit, with plans to convert the former parking into an agora, add a prominent children’s area, renew the library and open rooftop access.
  • More than 130,000 works have been moved to reserves ahead of redistribution between Paris and the new Massy site, as nearby businesses report sharp drops in footfall since partial closures began.
