Centre Overhauls Panjab University Governance as Punjab Leaders Threaten Legal Challenge

A government notification dated October 28 cut the Senate to 31, abolished the Graduate constituency, and converted the Syndicate into a nominated body.

Overview

  • Leaders of AAP, Congress and SAD condemned the changes, calling them an attack on Punjab’s autonomy and academic self-governance.
  • Punjab education minister Harjot Singh Bains said the state will oppose the decision in democratic forums and explore legal and constitutional remedies.
  • Officials said the overhaul implements a 2021 review led by then Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu, whose report was approved in September by Chancellor C. P. Radhakrishnan.
  • The restructured bodies add ex‑officio seats for the Chandigarh MP, UT officials and senior Punjab figures including the chief minister and the chief justice.
  • The North American Punjabi Association condemned the move and urged the Centre to reverse it and consult students, faculty, alumni and the Punjabi community.
