Centre Orders Banks to Digitise Loan Processing and Expand Micro‑credit

The aim is to convert large Jan Dhan account holdings into active financial use by mandating end‑to‑end online lending, Jan Suraksha portal enrolment, UPI credit lines and a saturation campaign.

Overview

  • DFS secretary Sanjay Lohiya told heads of public and private banks to shift focus from account opening to delivering fully digital loan processing and wider micro‑enterprise credit access.
  • Banks must enrol all new PMJJBY and PMSBY beneficiaries through the Jan Suraksha portal and the ministry will integrate the portal with banks and insurers to improve data and claims handling.
  • The DFS asked banks to expand working‑capital channels for small firms using UPI credit lines and credit‑card solutions so micro‑enterprises can draw credit quickly through digital rails.
  • Banks were directed to boost awareness of claim eligibility, speed up grievance handling for Jan Suraksha schemes, and increase branch and banking‑correspondent coverage in unbanked villages.
  • The ministry expects full bank participation in a financial‑inclusion saturation campaign from 21 October to 31 December to drive enrollment, usage and pension persistency under schemes built on the JAM framework.
