Centre Notifies Transfer of 11 High Court Judges as Delhi Gets Three and Loses Two

The orders, issued under Article 222 on collegium advice, intensify scrutiny of undisclosed reasons for shifting judges.

Overview

  • Presidential notifications moved Delhi High Court judges Tara Vitasta Ganju to Karnataka and Arun Monga to Rajasthan.
  • Delhi will receive Justices Dinesh Mehta and Avneesh Jhinghan from Rajasthan and Justice C. Sudha from Kerala, with Mehta set to become the court’s fourth most senior judge.
  • The reshuffle marks the third overhaul affecting Delhi this year and leaves it with the highest number of judges from outside, reported as nine.
  • The notifications gave no reasons; Hindustan Times cited people familiar saying adverse reports informed the transfers of Monga and Ganju, a claim several lawyers disputed.
  • The 11-judge package also relocates judges among Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Allahabad, Patna, Calcutta, Madras, and Madhya Pradesh high courts pursuant to earlier collegium recommendations.
