Overview
- The government notified new Foreigners Regional Registration Offices in Kohima (Nagaland), Agartala (Tripura) and Bhubaneswar (Odisha), raising the total number of FRROs to 20, the Ministry of Home Affairs said on Monday, November 2, 2026.
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed that an FRRO be set up in every state capital by 2027, and five FRROs have been opened since 2025 in cities including Jaipur, Chandigarh, Aizawl, Amravati and Guwahati.
- FRROs handle post-arrival registration, issue registration certificates or residential permits, record changes in a foreigner’s details, process visa extensions and conversions, and manage overstays and exit permits.
- Kohima and Agartala were previously under the Kolkata FRRO and Bhubaneswar was under Hyderabad, and the government is considering further offices for states such as Bihar, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Meghalaya.
- Officials say the expansion aims to make services more accessible for legitimate visitors while improving local-level compliance and coordination with state authorities, which could speed up paperwork, reduce overstays and strengthen immigration enforcement.
