Overview

• A six-member sub-committee with three representatives each from the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance, plus Ladakh MP Mohd Haneefa Jan, has been invited to New Delhi.
• Talks are set to focus on demands for full statehood and inclusion of Ladakh under the Constitution’s Sixth Schedule for tribal and local governance safeguards.
• Delegates plan to seek the release of activist Sonam Wangchuk, detained under the National Security Act, and about 25 others held after the September 24 protests.
• The Home Ministry’s invitation comes two days after it ordered a judicial inquiry into the Leh clashes in which security firing left four dead and many injured.
• Leaders say they will also raise calls for a dedicated Ladakh Public Service Commission and an additional parliamentary seat before further deliberations with a higher-level MHA panel.
