Centre Invites Ladakh Leaders for Oct. 22 Talks on Statehood and Sixth Schedule

Ladakh groups agreed to resume dialogue after the home ministry ordered a judicial inquiry into the September 24 killings.

Overview

  • A six-member delegation from the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance, along with Ladakh MP Mohammad Haneefa Jan, will meet an MHA sub-committee in New Delhi.
  • Talks will focus on the push for full statehood and Sixth Schedule safeguards to protect Ladakh’s land, jobs, and culture.
  • The four-point agenda also includes a dedicated Ladakh Public Service Commission and two parliamentary seats for the Union Territory.
  • Leaders plan to seek the release of detainees, including activist Sonam Wangchuk held under the National Security Act, compensation for victims, and representation in the judicial probe.
  • The meeting is with an MHA sub-committee rather than the earlier High-Powered Committee, with a follow-up at the higher level possible if progress is made after past talks stalled and an October 6 session was boycotted.
