Centre Flags Sewage, Waste Gaps Keeping Yamuna Polluted in Delhi

A Rajya Sabha reply blames persisting treatment gaps despite heavy spending.

Overview

  • The government identified discharge of untreated or partially treated sewage as the primary driver of Yamuna pollution in the capital.
  • As of August 2025, Delhi faced a 414 MLD sewage treatment shortfall and several approved industrial areas still lacked common effluent treatment plants.
  • Delhi generates 11,862 tonnes of solid waste daily but can process only 7,641 tonnes, leaving a 4,221-tonne gap that adds to the river’s pollution load.
  • The Delhi Jal Board spent about ₹5,536 crore over the past three financial years, while the National Mission for Clean Ganga continues financial support to states.
  • Under Namami Gange, 35 projects worth ₹6,534 crore aim to add 2,243 MLD of sewage treatment capacity, with 21 completed; monitoring at Palla showed September BOD of 2.5 mg/l and DO of 9.5 mg/l after earlier medians of 4 and 6.
