Overview

  • The Transport Ministry notified the Central Motor Vehicles (Third Amendment) Rules, 2025 on August 21, formally setting renewal charges for vehicles beyond 20 years of age.
  • Renewal for light motor vehicles rises to Rs 10,000 from Rs 5,000, with motorcycles at Rs 2,000, three-wheelers and quadricycles at Rs 5,000, imported 2/3-wheelers at Rs 20,000, imported 4+ wheelers at Rs 80,000, and other vehicles at Rs 12,000.
  • The schedule marks the first explicit listing for 20-plus-year vehicles, updating rules that previously focused on those over 15 years.
  • These charges follow the October 2021 fee hikes under the vehicle scrappage policy, and reported figures do not include GST.
  • A recent Supreme Court order bars coercive action against older petrol and diesel vehicles in Delhi-NCR, creating a constraint on enforcement.
