Centre Disputes Mamata’s Claim on DVC Releases After Friday’s 70,000-Cusec Outflow

Central officials say releases totalled about 70,000 cusecs, countering the chief minister's higher claim.

Overview

  • Jal Shakti Minister C R Paatil, citing the Damodar Valley Reservoir Regulation Committee, said Maithon released 42,500 cusecs and Panchet 27,500 cusecs, denying a 150,000-cusec discharge.
  • Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged an unnotified 65,000-cusec release on Bijoya Dashami and later claimed cumulative releases exceeded 150,000 cusecs, calling it a manufactured disaster.
  • Durgapur barrage outflow rose to roughly 59,000–69,000 cusecs on Friday as inflows increased, with district authorities opening control rooms and watching vulnerable stretches in Bardhaman, Hooghly, Howrah, Bankura and the Medinipurs.
  • The IMD forecast heavy to very heavy rain linked to a depression over eastern India, raising the risk of higher inflows into the Damodar and potential operational adjustments at reservoirs.
  • By Saturday midday officials reported no fresh DVC release, though gauges showed rising river levels at several points, and the Centre said lower Damodar levels remained below warning thresholds.
