Centre Delays Chandigarh Status Bill After Punjab Outcry

The government’s clarification followed rare cross-party resistance in Punjab.

Overview

  • A Parliament bulletin had listed a proposal, reported as the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2025, to bring Chandigarh under Article 240 and enable direct central regulation with a Lieutenant Governor.
  • The Centre has clarified it will not introduce such a bill in the next session of Parliament.
  • Leaders from AAP, Congress, SAD and even voices within the Punjab BJP denounced the listing as an attempt to reduce Punjab’s say over its capital.
  • SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal asserted Chandigarh is Punjab’s inalienable right, demanded its transfer to the state, and warned against curbs on Panjab University and dilution of control over the BBMB.
  • Commentary linked the uproar to longstanding grievances over Chandigarh’s unresolved status since the 1966 reorganisation and recalled earlier unfulfilled commitments.
