Overview
- The Ministry of Defence issued Gazette notification SRO 33(E) on August 3, 2026, formally superseding the 1976 S.R.O. 150 under Section 3 of the Works of Defence Act, 1903.
- The statutory restricted area around the Juhu Signal Transmitting Station was narrowed from about 457.20 metres (500 yards) to 100 metres, with restrictions under clause (c) of Section 7 applying inside the new boundary.
- The revised order took effect on publication in the Official Gazette and a sketch plan of the demarcated area can be inspected at the Sub-Divisional Officer, Buildings and Roads, Santacruz.
- Local residents and elected officials welcomed the change as it removes a long-standing legal obstacle to rebuilding, but any redevelopment still needs separate municipal, aviation and planning approvals.
- The move follows a years-long campaign and could speed renewal of ageing buildings and slum clusters outside the 100-metre zone, potentially improving safety and housing conditions for many Juhu residents.
