Centre Clears 53-Acre Salt Land Transfer, Paving Way for Dahisar–Bhayander Link in 3 Years
The approval removes the main bottleneck to extending Mumbai’s coastal-road corridor to Mira-Bhayander.
Overview
- The Ministry of Commerce and Industry approved transferring 215,189 sq m (53.174 acres) of salt land in Thane to Maharashtra on a 99-year lease for Rs 12,89,93,329.
- State officials said contracting has been initiated with L.E.T. Company selected, a budget of about Rs 3,000 crore, and a three-year completion target funded by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
- The planned route takes the coastal road to Uttan, then a 60-metre-wide Dahisar–Bhayander road to Subhash Chandra Bose Maidan on Mira Road, with onward links to Vasai and Virar.
- An earlier shoreline alignment faced resistance from Uttan’s fishing community, prompting a revised route, and the project still requires permits and inter-agency coordination before full mobilization.
- Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik projected a Nariman Point–to–Mira-Bhayander travel time of about 30 minutes via the coastal corridor once the works are completed.
