Centre, Bengal Clash Over DVC Dam Releases as Minister Puts Total at 70,000 Cusecs

Heavy rain keeps downstream districts on alert.

Overview

  • Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil cited Damodar Valley Reservoir Regulation Committee data showing releases of 42,500 cusecs from Maithon and 27,500 cusecs from Panchet, rejecting the 1.5 lakh cusec figure.
  • Mamata Banerjee alleged an initial 65,000 cusec discharge on Bijoya Dashami without prior intimation and later claimed cumulative releases exceeded 1.5 lakh cusecs, calling it a deliberate ploy.
  • Central officials said releases followed the Damodar Valley Reservoir Regulation Manual, noted that West Bengal inputs were sought but not received, and reported lower Damodar levels below warning thresholds at Harinkhola.
  • State irrigation updates flagged rising river gauges and alerts across Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Hooghly, Howrah and Bankura, with the IMD warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the basin.
  • After Friday’s discharge, one state report noted no fresh release by Saturday noon, while later reports said 70,000 cusecs were released on Saturday morning and another 70,000 on Sunday as DVC maintained an orange alert.
