Centre Backs Andhra Pradesh’s Semiconductor Push and Approves Port Rail Links

The federal pledge of R&D and skills support plus preliminary rail approvals aims to speed investment and shorten freight routes for the state.

Overview

  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu met Union ministers and secured a formal assurance that the Centre will support the state’s plan to build semiconductor design and manufacturing capacity with R&D help, skill training and capacity building.
  • Union Railways and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw approved required rail connectivity for nine seaports to improve freight movement from ports into the hinterland.
  • The Centre agreed in principle to introduce a Vande Bharat sleeper train linking Visakhapatnam and Bengaluru via Tirupati and signalled support for additional passenger services between Visakhapatnam and Tirupati.
  • Naidu submitted detailed railway project proposals for approval and funding, including the Vijayawada bypass (estimated ₹3,197 crore), Kovvur–Bhadrachalam (₹2,860 crore), Ongole–Donakonda (₹1,800 crore) and Anakapalli–Kothavalasa bypass (₹2,190 crore), plus requests for new bridges, extra lines and a high-speed Amaravati–Visakhapatnam corridor.
  • Next steps require formal sanctions: central ministries must clear project-level DPRs, agree funding or cost-sharing, and set implementation timetables—decisions that will determine how quickly chip investment, port freight gains and regional connectivity materialise.
