Centre Approves Nationwide Cashless Care for Road Crash Victims, Raises Compensation

Funding will flow from third-party motor insurance with uninsured cases charged to the Road Safety Fund.

Overview

  • Victims will receive cashless hospital care for up to seven days with coverage capped at ₹1.5 lakh per person at designated facilities, including those empanelled under Ayushman Bharat.
  • The scheme applies to crashes anywhere in India and is slated for a formal launch by the Prime Minister following its multi-state pilot.
  • Ex gratia for fatalities rises to ₹2 lakh, while hit-and-run compensation increases to ₹50,000 for injuries and ₹2 lakh for deaths.
  • Insurers providing third-party motor cover will fund the program, including a proposed ~1% premium contribution to a common pool, with the Road Safety Fund paying for uninsured vehicles.
  • A ₹25,000 reward will be granted to a single Good Samaritan who rushes a victim to hospital, and pilots in Assam, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Puducherry informed the rollout.
