Centre Approves NaMo Semiconductor Lab at IIT Bhubaneswar to Advance Chip Research and Skilling

The facility will build a local talent pipeline for Odisha’s ISM-backed SiC and 3D glass packaging projects.

Overview

  • Ashwini Vaishnaw cleared the establishment of the NaMo Semiconductor Laboratory at IIT Bhubaneswar, according to an official release.
  • The project is funded under the MPLAD scheme with an estimated outlay of Rs 4.95 crore.
  • The allocation includes equipment and software, with Rs 35 lakh earmarked for software and the balance for hardware.
  • The lab will complement IIT Bhubaneswar’s existing SiCRIC cleanrooms to support regional R&D and industry training.
  • The initiative aligns with India’s growing semiconductor base, which includes a large chip-design workforce, dozens of student tape-outs at SCL Mohali, and recent pilot ‘Made in India’ chip outputs.
