Overview
- The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways approved ₹1,427.61 crore Tuesday for a 14.9 km, four‑lane bypass on NH-83 that includes two road overbridges on NH‑129A and NH‑134A.
- The alignment will start near Adiyakkamangalam–Thandalai and pass through villages such as Athipuliyur, Andipalayam, Kidaramkondan, Pallivaramangalam, Perumpugalur, Ilavangarkudi, and Anaivadapathi Colony.
- The bypass is designed to divert heavy traffic from Tiruvarur town to reduce congestion, cut local travel time by about 15 minutes, and improve road safety by moving freight away from crowded commercial areas.
- NHAI had floated tenders for the project in August 2025 under the hybrid annuity design‑build‑operate‑transfer model and bids are expected to be opened in June 2026 once procurement proceeds.
- Earlier land acquisition problems and a contractor abandonment stalled the corridor; completion of a related 65.37 km contract cleared conditions for this restart and the project is expected to boost links to Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore, Karaikal and Nagapattinam while affecting local travel during construction.
