Overview

  • Central Railways issued the no-objection certificate on June 24, clearing the way for the bridge to open to traffic this week.
  • The 154-year-old original span was demolished in November 2022 after a structural audit deemed it unsafe for daily use.
  • The new bridge spans 70 metres long and 9.5 metres wide, features modern signage and lighting, and supports four vehicular lanes.
  • BMC officials project the reopened link between Masjid Bunder and CSMT stations will significantly ease vehicular backups in South Mumbai.
  • Work on the adjacent Sion Bridge, closed in August 2023 for reconstruction, remains under way with a target completion by March 2026.
