Central Railway Reopens Second Mumbai–Pune Ghat Line, Deccan Queen to Resume

Goods-train trials followed by a restricted 20 km/h passenger run validated repairs, leaving a final up line that requires about 7–10 days to fix.

Overview

  • Heavy monsoon landslides on July 6, 2026 damaged all three lines in the Karjat–Lonavala ghat and halted large parts of Mumbai–Pune rail traffic.
  • After 10 days of round‑the‑clock work, Central Railway completed repairs to the south‑east Down line on Tuesday, July 14, and validated the track with three goods-train runs.
  • Train No. 22107 (CSMT–Latur Express) made the first restricted passenger traversal of the repaired Down line on the night of July 14–15 at 20 km/h, confirming operational readiness.
  • Central Railway has scheduled the Deccan Queen (12123/12124) and the Intercity Express (12127/12128) to resume services from July 16, 2026, as phased operations restart.
  • Restoration has used more than 1,200 labourers, engineers and heavy machines and labour special trains remain in use, but the Up line still needs about 7–10 days of repair so some services will stay regulated and passengers should check NTES for live status.
