CENTCOM: Nearly 25 ISIS Operatives Killed or Captured in Syria After Large-Scale Strikes

CENTCOM casts the raids as targeted counterterrorism to blunt ISIS remnants after the Palmyra ambush.

Overview

  • U.S. and partner forces carried out 11 missions across Syria from December 20 to 29, killing at least seven ISIS members and capturing the rest, CENTCOM said.
  • Four ISIS weapons caches were destroyed during the follow-on operations.
  • The raids built on Operation Hawkeye Strike on December 19, when U.S. and Jordanian forces hit about 70 targets with more than 100 precision munitions using fighter jets, attack helicopters and artillery.
  • The campaign answered a December 13 attack near Palmyra that killed two U.S. soldiers and a civilian interpreter, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth calling the December 19 strikes a “declaration of vengeance.”
  • CENTCOM said ISIS inspired at least 11 plots or attacks in the U.S. this year and reported over 300 detentions in Syria in 2025, while a U.S. official said growing cooperation with Syria’s new government enabled access to areas previously off-limits.
