Cenepred Warns of Immediate Jungle Flood Threat and 1.18 Million at Very High Risk for Summer 2026

The new risk scenarios guide regional and local preparedness based on Senamhi forecasts.

Overview

  • For January–March 2026, Cenepred identifies 3,364 population centers and 1,184,882 people at very high risk of flooding, with Piura (364,843), Cajamarca, Loreto, Apurímac and San Martín most exposed.
  • From December 10–12, about 210,226 inhabitants in jungle localities face a very high flood threat across Cusco, Huánuco, Junín, Madre de Dios, Pasco, Puno and Ucayali.
  • Senamhi forecasts daily rain totals up to 60 mm in the north jungle, around 90 mm in the central jungle and near 80 mm in the south, with electrical storms and wind gusts near 45 km/h.
  • In the summer flood scenario, Cenepred reports potential exposure of 386,988 homes, 1,169 health facilities and 5,118 schools nationwide.
  • Beyond flooding, the summer outlook maps very high risk of landslides and debris flows for 2,002,291 people across 31,151 population centers, prompting calls for targeted interventions.
