Ceasefire Decision Could Clear Way for Zaporizhzhia Power-Line Repairs Within Days

Work must be carried out on both sides several kilometres from the plant, requiring security guarantees.

Overview

  • Rosatom's chief said a temporary "quiet period" to enable repairs could be introduced as early as 17 October, calling the plan tentative and preliminary.
  • IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said he expects repair work to begin within days after consultations with both Russia and Ukraine.
  • The plant has been without off-site power since 23 September and is running on seven emergency diesel generators, with 13 more in standby, while safety systems operate normally.
  • IAEA monitors report effective cooling of shutdown reactors and spent fuel, full service-water ponds, and radiation levels that remain normal for the site.
  • Before the war the plant had ten power lines; only two remained in recent years, with a 330 kV line lost on 7 May and the final 750 kV line disconnected on 23 September, prompting the longest complete loss of external power during the conflict.
