Ceará Reports Large Drop in May Homicides and Property Crimes

Authorities say intensified intelligence-led policing produced the declines and improved the state's national violence ranking.

Overview

  • Officials announced on Wednesday that Ceará recorded 137 Crimes Violentos Letais e Intencionais (CVLIs) in May 2026, down from 267 in May 2025.
  • Fortaleza and the Região Metropolitana de Fortaleza showed the steepest monthly falls with 21 and 13 CVLIs in May 2026 respectively, declines of roughly 70% and 83.5% from May 2025.
  • With May included the state reported 722 homicides from January–May 2026 versus 1,198 in the same period of 2025, a year-to-date reduction of about 39.7%.
  • Crimes Violentos contra o Patrimônio (violent property crimes) also fell sharply in May to 1,038 incidents statewide, a 60.3% drop from May 2025 with Fortaleza showing a 62.9% fall.
  • Published regional subtotals conflict with the statewide totals because one Supesp table shows Interior CVLIs rising year to date, so reconciliation of regional data and whether the declines persist outside Fortaleza will be key to watch.
