Overview

  • The Rhineland-Palatinate CDU unveiled the “Grundschulgarantie” to standardize primary school days from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Under the proposal every pupil would receive a free lunch and dedicated in-school homework time to ensure afternoons remain free for family life and extracurriculars.
  • Instruction would focus on core competencies in reading, writing, and mathematics while English and French lessons would begin only at secondary level.
  • Primary school teachers would retain flexibility to design daily lessons within the fixed timetable to address individual class needs.
  • The CDU plans to table the concept in the state parliament in the second half of 2025, though the number of additional staff required has yet to be determined.
