CDOT Snowplow Crosses Median and Hits Youth Hockey Team Van on I-70, Killing Driver and Injuring 8

Investigators have opened a vehicular crimes case, with several injured children now discharged.

Overview

  • Colorado State Patrol says a westbound CDOT plow lost control near milepost 218 around 8:53 a.m., broke through the median cable barrier, and struck vehicles in the eastbound lanes.
  • The plow first hit a Toyota Tacoma that then collided with a BMW, before the plow struck a Sprinter van carrying members of the Santa Clarita Flyers 12U team, sending the van down an embankment.
  • The van’s driver died at the scene; eight passengers were hospitalized, including five juveniles and three adults, and one child was airlifted in critical condition.
  • Denver Health reported four injured children were discharged or about to be discharged, with two adults in serious condition and one in fair condition.
  • Eastbound I-70 closures were rolled back by mid-afternoon as CSP’s Vehicular Crimes Unit continued the investigation, and the Flyers organization shared statements and a fundraiser to support affected families.
