Overview
- Colorado State Patrol says a westbound CDOT plow lost control near milepost 218 around 8:53 a.m., broke through the median cable barrier, and struck vehicles in the eastbound lanes.
- The plow first hit a Toyota Tacoma that then collided with a BMW, before the plow struck a Sprinter van carrying members of the Santa Clarita Flyers 12U team, sending the van down an embankment.
- The van’s driver died at the scene; eight passengers were hospitalized, including five juveniles and three adults, and one child was airlifted in critical condition.
- Denver Health reported four injured children were discharged or about to be discharged, with two adults in serious condition and one in fair condition.
- Eastbound I-70 closures were rolled back by mid-afternoon as CSP’s Vehicular Crimes Unit continued the investigation, and the Flyers organization shared statements and a fundraiser to support affected families.
