Overview
- Halsted Street has been fully closed since August 4 with detours routing drivers half a mile west to Ashland Avenue or east via Orleans and Wells streets
- Chicago Avenue Bridge has been narrowed to two lanes between Larrabee and Peoria Streets ahead of a complete shutdown planned after October
- CDOT acting commissioner Craig Turner says a precise full‐closure date will be announced later as part of an expedited construction timeline
- The project will reconfigure the corridor with a riverwalk beneath the bridge, a dedicated bus lane, protected bike lanes and a new traffic signal at Chicago Avenue and Jefferson Street
- Both the Halsted Viaduct and Chicago Avenue Bridge are slated to reopen upon project completion in December 2026
