Overview
- The city will allocate 234 million pesos in 2026 so each of 189 markets receives one million pesos, a plan announced Wednesday by Jefa de Gobierno Clara Brugada.
- Officials say the two-year effort totals 468 million pesos to intervene in 270 markets and aims to reach roughly 80 percent of the 340 public markets identified in the city diagnostic.
- Market vendors will hold assemblies to decide works and will form two commissions per market—one to administer funds and one to supervise their use—to keep decisions local.
- Priority repairs focus on risk-prevention tasks such as renewing electrical and gas installations, fixing hydraulic and sanitary networks, and repairing roofs, walls and waterproofing while nine large markets will receive works managed by the Secretaría de Obras y Servicios (SOBSE).
- The program pairs vendor control with municipal support by assigning 60 architects and engineers to help from cost estimation through execution and by allowing vendors to hire small local contractors so the upgrades benefit about 41,000 sellers and their communities.
