CDC Probes Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Recalled Eggs as 95 Fall Ill in 14 States

Country Eggs issued a recall of CA-7695 cage-free “Sunshine” eggs during an FDA traceback investigation.

Overview

  • Recalled cartons carry code CA-7695 with sell-by dates from July 1 through Sept. 16 and were sold under Nagatoshi Produce, Misuho (Mizuho) and Nijiya Markets.
  • The eggs were distributed to grocery stores and food service distributors in California and Nevada from June 16 to July 9 and were also packed for foodservice as “sunshine yolks” or “omega-3 golden yolks.”
  • Officials report 95 illnesses across at least 14 states, including 73 in California, with 18 hospitalizations and no deaths confirmed.
  • Illnesses began in early January and continued through late July, and health agencies caution that counts could rise because outbreak links take weeks to confirm.
  • Country Eggs has suspended production of the affected products, and CDC and FDA advise consumers to discard or return recalled eggs and to wash any surfaces that may have been contaminated.
