Overview

  • Investigators traced the October 2024 incident at Famous Yeti’s Pizza in Stoughton to THC-infused cooking oil mistakenly used in dough for pizzas, garlic bread and sandwiches.
  • At least 85 patrons aged 1 to 91 experienced intoxication symptoms such as dizziness, sleepiness, vomiting and hallucinations, with seven people hospitalized and eight children affected.
  • Local police and Public Health Madison & Dane County determined the contamination was accidental and no charges were filed, allowing the restaurant to reopen on October 26 after sanitation.
  • The CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report published on July 24 formally documented the clinical outcomes of the outbreak and confirmed its accidental nature.
  • The report urges clear labeling, locked storage of THC products and staff training in shared-use kitchens, and stakeholders are now reviewing those guidelines to prevent repeat events.
