CD Projekt Pauses Witcher 1 Remake to Build It on Witcher 4’s Technical Foundation

The studio says the remake will wait until assets, tools and pipelines created for its Unreal Engine 5 Witcher 4 are available for efficient development.

Overview

  • CD Projekt confirmed on Wednesday that work on the Witcher 1 remake has been paused because it must be built using assets and pipelines produced during Witcher 4 development.
  • The Witcher 4 is being developed on Unreal Engine 5 and is the company’s top priority, with CD Projekt targeting a 2028 launch and shifting internal resources to that project.
  • Fool’s Theory, originally contracted for the remake, has been reassigned to develop the Songs of the Past expansion for Witcher 3 and to assist on Witcher 4, leaving the remake on hold.
  • CD Projekt will release a free Witcher 3 Remastered update on September 29, 2026 and a paid Songs of the Past expansion in 2027 as part of a plan to re-engage players and bridge to the sequel.
  • Observers estimate the remake will likely slip to around 2029, and the pause signals CD Projekt’s intent to use new UE5 tools and stricter QA to avoid past launch problems and shorten later development work.
