Overview

  • The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) issued notices to 13 e-commerce platforms, including Amazon, Flipkart, and Meesho, for selling walkie-talkies without mandatory licensing and disclosure requirements.
  • Platforms failed to provide critical regulatory details such as frequency specifications, licensing obligations, and Equipment Type Approval (ETA), violating Indian consumer protection and telegraphy laws.
  • A preliminary review identified hundreds of non-compliant listings, with 467 on Amazon, 314 on Flipkart, 489 on Meesho, and 423 on TradeIndia since January 2023.
  • The CCPA has requested seller information, product details, certification status, and sales data from these platforms to assess the scope of the violations.
  • Draft guidelines to enhance platform accountability and prevent the illegal sale of licensed wireless devices will soon be released for public feedback.
