CBSE Revokes Neerja Modi School Affiliation After 9-Year-Old’s Death

An inquiry found sustained bullying with systemic safety failures.

Overview

  • The withdrawal takes immediate effect, with Class 10 and 12 students allowed to sit 2025–26 board exams from the same campus, while current Class 9 and 11 students will be shifted to nearby schools for the 2026–27 session.
  • CBSE cited a complete breakdown of counselling and grievance redressal, noting that the anti-bullying mechanism failed to engage despite repeated parental complaints since July 2024.
  • Investigators flagged inadequate CCTV coverage and retention, missing safety nets or protective railings on upper floors, lack of vigilant staff and ID use, and the immediate cleaning of bloodstains that compromised forensic scrutiny.
  • The school is barred from new admissions and from promoting lower classes into 9 and 11, with any bid for re-affiliation limited to the secondary level no earlier than 2027–28 and senior secondary only after further compliant years.
  • CBSE issued a show-cause notice on November 20 and reviewed the school’s December 19 response; the child’s parents welcomed the decision and urged state authorities to act, including on recognition for Classes 1–8.
