CBSE Mandates Two School Counselor Roles With 1:500 Ratio From Next Academic Year

The circular sets qualifications, training timelines, and access provisions for smaller campuses.

Overview

  • Affiliated schools must appoint a Counselling & Wellness Teacher and a separate Career Counsellor beginning next academic year, replacing the single-counsellor model.
  • CBSE requires a counsellor-to-student ratio of 1:500 to support socio-emotional needs and structured career guidance.
  • Schools with fewer than 300 students must ensure access to qualified counsellors through full-time appointments or shared services with nearby schools.
  • Socio-emotional counsellors need degrees in psychology or social work, while career counsellors must be graduates in specified disciplines and complete a CBSE-sanctioned 50-hour professional development course.
  • All counsellors are required to finish a structured training program within two academic years, with the option to use a Hub & Spoke model for clustered service delivery.
