CBSA Reveals Back-to-Back Blue Water Bridge Cocaine Seizures Totalling 349 Kilograms

Investigators say the charges proceed in Sarnia under an intelligence-led focus on U.S. truck routes.

Overview

  • CBSA disclosed that officers intercepted suspected cocaine on Aug. 13 and 14 at the Blue Water Bridge in Point Edward after referring two U.S.-origin trucks for secondary examinations.
  • Officers seized 150 kg valued at an estimated $18.8 million on the first day and 199 kg valued at an estimated $24.9 million on the second day, for a combined 349 kg.
  • Drivers Gurjeet Singh, 28, of Brampton, and Abdikadir Egal, 38, of Etobicoke were arrested, transferred to RCMP custody, and charged with importation and possession for the purpose of trafficking.
  • Both cases are before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sarnia with investigations ongoing and charges subject to judicial validation, and local court records note Singh appeared by video Wednesday and Egal has a bail hearing expected in about two weeks.
  • CBSA reported that between Jan. 1 and Aug. 20, officers seized about 1.52 tonnes of cocaine entering from the United States versus 878 kilograms from other countries, underscoring the land route’s prominence.
