CBSA Removes Three, Opens 78 Immigration Probes in B.C. Extortion Crackdown

The multi-agency effort uses immigration law to disrupt transnational networks behind a surge of extortion targeting South Asian-owned businesses.

  • CBSA says three non-citizens linked to British Columbia extortion investigations have been removed from Canada, with 78 additional foreign nationals now under IRPA investigation.
  • The measures fall under the RCMP-led BC Extortion Task Force created to counter escalating threats and shootings against businesses in the Lower Mainland.
  • CBSA’s Pacific Region teams are assisting with search warrants, Immigration and Refugee Protection Act investigations and intelligence-sharing with policing partners.
  • The task force has 40 members drawn from CBSA, B.C. RCMP, Abbotsford Police, CFSEU‑BC, Delta Police, Metro Vancouver Transit Police, Surrey Police Service and Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit.
  • RCMP’s National Co-ordination and Support Team is facilitating information-sharing across B.C., Alberta and Ontario, while Surrey police report 65 extortion files this year, including 35 with gunfire.
