CBS: Netherlands Reaches 452,000 Millionaire Households in 2024

Portfolios skew to business ownership over home equity, signaling a distinct asset mix from other households.

Overview

  • Millionaire households accounted for 5.5% of all households on 1 January 2024, rising by 17,000 in a year to 452,000.
  • The typical millionaire household held €1.6 million in net wealth, compared with €110,000 for non‑millionaire households, with about two thirds in the €1–2 million bracket.
  • Roughly 40% of millionaire assets consist of substantial shareholdings and business wealth, while about a quarter is tied to the primary residence; for non‑millionaires, the home makes up over three quarters of assets.
  • Geographically, Noord-Holland and Utrecht have the highest concentrations at 7% of households, with Bloemendaal and Laren near one in three millionaires, while Groningen, Flevoland and Limburg are below 4%.
  • Local figures highlight sharp variation within Flevoland, ranging from Noordoostpolder at 6.2% and Zeewolde at 6.0% to Lelystad at 2.4% and Almere at 2.3%, and nearly 40% of millionaire households rely primarily on pensions as income with 55% of working millionaires self‑employed.
