CBS Names Matt Gutman Chief Correspondent, Sets Jan. 5 Start

The move marks one of Bari Weiss’ first on-air additions under Paramount-Skydance’s mandate to remake the news division.

Overview

  • CBS announced Tuesday that the longtime ABC reporter will report for CBS Mornings and CBS Evening News, lead 48 Hours, and contribute to future seasons of 60 Minutes.
  • He will be based in Los Angeles, serve as a fill-in anchor, and begin on Jan. 5, 2026.
  • The hire is among the first on-air moves under editor in chief Bari Weiss as the new ownership team drives an overhaul of CBS News.
  • Weiss praised Gutman’s “fearlessness, energy and relentlessness,” and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski cited his immersive field reporting.
  • Gutman’s background includes extensive coverage of the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as ABC suspensions in 2020 and 2021 and a September 2025 remark that prompted an apology.
