CBS: Dutch Millionaire Households Rise to 452,000

Rising home values helped push more households over the threshold, while most wealth at the top sits in business stakes rather than primary residences.

Overview

  • New CBS figures show 5.5% of households had net wealth of €1 million or more on 1 January 2024, up 17,000 from a year earlier.
  • Wealth is most concentrated in Noord-Holland and Utrecht, with Bloemendaal (34.6%) and Laren (33.9%) leading all municipalities.
  • Groningen, Flevoland and Limburg have the smallest shares of millionaire households, each below 4%.
  • About 40% of millionaire assets are in substantial shareholdings and business equity versus roughly a quarter in owner-occupied housing; nearly 40% rely primarily on pensions for income.
  • Among working millionaires, 55% are self-employed, down from 71% in 2014; the median millionaire household holds €1.6 million, compared with €110,000 for non-millionaires.
