CBS Boise Meteorologist Roland Steadham, 67, Among Two Killed in Idaho River Plane Crash

A federal investigation now focuses on a suspected power-line strike that preceded the crash.

Overview

  • CBS2 confirmed Steadham died after a small aircraft went down on the icy Payette River near Emmett on Jan. 27, with two people on board and no survivors.
  • CBS2 later reported the Gem County Coroner identified the second victim as Dallin Laufenberg.
  • The Gem County Sheriff’s Office said preliminary evidence indicates the plane clipped a power line, causing outages that Idaho Power worked to restore once the scene was secured.
  • The FAA said the NTSB is leading the probe; local and manufacturer officials said the aircraft was a CubCrafters Carbon Cub that the company owned and had loaned to a private individual.
  • Steadham was a commercially licensed, highly experienced pilot with more than 3,000 flight hours, and authorities have not said who was at the controls when the aircraft crashed.
