CBP Seizes Nearly 2.6 Metric Tons of Meth at Texas Ports

HSI has opened criminal investigations into the Texas interdictions.

Overview

  • CBP officers at the Colombia–Solidaridad bridge in Laredo on Aug. 29 found four sacks of meth concealed in a truck hauling aluminum drill bits, totaling 4,241 pounds (1,923.76 kg) with an estimated street value above $37.9 million.
  • At the Pharr port on Sept. 2, secondary inspection of a trailer declared as broccoli revealed 488 packages hidden in the trailer roof containing 671.5 kg of meth, valued at about $13.23 million.
  • Officers credited non-intrusive inspection equipment, X-ray imaging and trained canine teams for detecting the concealed loads in both commercial trailers.
  • CBP secured the drugs and referred the cases to Homeland Security Investigations, while no immediate arrests were reported in the Laredo case.
  • In a separate Aug. 25 incident near Sonoyta in the Tucson Sector, Border Patrol agents recovered about 18 pounds of meth after a suspect abandoned the load and fled back into Mexico.
