CBP San Diego Reports Nearly 10,000 Pounds of Drugs Seized in August

A Cato analysis says most convicted drug traffickers are U.S. citizens.

  • The San Diego Field Office recorded 155 seizures totaling nearly 10,000 pounds of narcotics valued at about $24 million along with more than $340,000 in unreported currency.
  • At Otay Mesa on Aug. 27, officers found 1,352 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in 225 wood furniture pieces in a tractor-trailer, leading to a visa cancellation and seizure of the rig and drugs.
  • On Aug. 28 in Tecate, officers intercepted 556 pounds of methamphetamine concealed in barrels of jalapeño paste and canceled the 32-year-old driver’s visa.
  • Earlier stops included 241 pounds of methamphetamine in a Calexico bus gas tank on Aug. 13 and a San Ysidro SUV with 58 pounds of heroin plus 62 pounds of meth on Aug. 19, with drivers arrested in both cases.
  • CBP credited canines and non-intrusive inspection technology for the detections, and separately reported a 91.42-pound meth seizure at Brownsville’s Veterans International Bridge.
